IQBAL ACADEMY HYDERABAD
Iqbal Academy was founded in 1959 by Syed Khaleelullah Husainni, a highly respected leader.
The Academy, an autonomous institution is a link in the long tradition of Iqbal appreciation and study in the historic city of Hyderabad. The city has had a special relationship with Iqbal and his works. It was in Hyderabad that the first anthology of Iqbal’s Urdu poetry; a collection of some of his essays; his selected letters and; works like Falsafa-e-Ajam and Muraqqa-e-Iqbal were published. Some of the first important critical works on Iqbal by scholars like Dr. Yusuf Husain Khan and Dr. Aziz Ahmad were also produced in Hyderabad.
Taking off as an informal group the Iqbal Academy over the years has become one of the leading centers of studies on the poet. It has been a forum for several important lectures and discussions on Allama Iqbal providing intellectual stimulation to the general public, researchers and scholars. The Academy has the distinction of organizing debates, talks and largely attended seminars and conferences on the poet. Two of the more prominent seminars were held in 1972, Iqbal’s birth centenary year. They were followed by an international seminar in 1986 in which delegates from Egypt, Russia, Britain and Pakistan besides different parts of India took part. Several distinguished men of letters and scholars had read papers and spoken from the Academy’s platform. They include Dr. Anne Marie Schimmel, Dr. Jagannath Azad, a reputed Iqbal expert, Dr. Syed Wahiduddin and Prof. S. Salahuddin, both former heads of Department of Philosophy, Osmania Univerisity, Gulam Dastagir Rasheed, Former Head of Department of Persian, Osmania University, and, Aziz Ahmed, reputed writer, critic and Islamist.
Thus, the Iqbal Academy (NGO) has been silently and doggedly doing its bit to spread and propagate the Islamic and Humanistic message of Iqbal among all and sundry especially among the students and youngsters. Holding regular literary meetings and get-togethers, bringing out a regular bi-annual IQBAL REVIEW. It has a well stacked library with a good collection of books ( almost 30,000 ) in Urdu , English, Persian and other languages and , a good research centre for academics, scholars and intellectuals. From time to time noted scholars and intellectuals, national and international keep visiting us and are all praise for the centre and its collection.
The Academy has published several books. Some of its publications in Urdu are – Iqbal: Kashish Aur Gurez by Dr. Alam Khundmiri; Mutala-e-Iqbal Chand Nae Zaviay by Prof. Syed Sirajuddin and; Aao Iqbal Se Milen by Saleha Altaf.
